Origins:
El Algarve estuvo habitado desde la Prehistoria por comunidades íberas y más tarde por fenicios, cartagineses y romanos. Bajo dominio romano, la región formó parte de la provincia de Lusitania y desarrolló puertos, agricultura y comercio costero.
Middle Ages:
Durante la Edad Media, el Algarve fue uno de los últimos territorios de la península en permanecer bajo control musulmán, conocido como al‑Gharb al‑Andalus. En 1249 fue incorporado al Reino de Portugal, consolidándose como una zona estratégica marítima y agrícola.
19th Century:
En el siglo XIX, la región siguió siendo mayoritariamente rural, basada en la pesca, la agricultura (especialmente cítricos y almendros) y la producción salinera. La apertura de nuevas rutas de transporte y el desarrollo portuario impulsaron paulatinamente la modernización local.
Present:
Hoy, el Algarve es uno de los destinos turísticos más importantes de Portugal, conocido por sus playas, acantilados, pueblos costeros y clima suave. Combina tradición pesquera, naturaleza protegida y un desarrollo turístico que ha transformado su economía y proyección internacional.
