Volendam's story in a few lines:
Origins:
Volendam emerged in the 14th century when the inhabitants of Edam enclosed their old harbor with a dike. The area was filled in and became a new fishing settlement, which soon grew around the small inner harbor.
Middle Ages:
Although not a large city, Volendam established itself as an important fishing and agricultural town. Its inhabitants developed a very distinct identity, with traditional clothing and typical wooden architecture that is still preserved today.
19th Century:
In the 19th century, fishing and shipbuilding boosted its economy. Furthermore, the town began to attract European painters, who found inspiration in its colors, light, and everyday scenes, transforming it into a kind of artistic colony.
Present:
Today, Volendam is one of the most visited towns in the Netherlands, famous for its picturesque harbor, traditional costumes, wooden houses, and maritime atmosphere. It is a very popular tourist destination near Amsterdam.
It's a small, residential village. It's pretty, yes, but it really only has the harbor promenade, so if it's conveniently located, fine, but if you're not making a special trip, it's not worth it since there are other very beautiful villages in the area. You can get there by bus.
