Zaanse Schans (Jan 4, 2026):

Zaanse Schans
Yes, it's worth it
We took this trip visiting several cities and countries. Here's the complete route:

A brief history of Zaanche Schans:

Origins:

The name Zaanse Schans comes from a fortification built in 1574 to defend the Zaan region against the advance of Spanish troops. The area was already known for its early industrial mills, driven by mechanical innovations that would transform the production of wood and other materials.

Modern Age:

Between the 17th and 19th centuries, the Zaan region became one of Europe's first major industrial districts, with hundreds of mills dedicated to sawing wood, grinding pigments, producing oil, and processing spices. Their activity fueled trade, shipbuilding, and economic growth during the Dutch Golden Age.

20th Century:

Following industrial modernization, many traditional houses and mills were at risk of disappearing. From 1947 onwards, a plan was devised to preserve the heritage by relocating historic buildings to a protected area. Between 1961 and 1974, numerous houses and mills were relocated, creating a unique ensemble that was officially opened in 1972.

Present:

Today, Zaanse Schans functions as a living museum village that recreates Dutch life of the 18th and 19th centuries. Its working windmills, artisan workshops, and original houses have made it one of the most visited destinations in the Netherlands and a symbol of Dutch cultural identity.

General conclusions ✦✦

It's not a very big town, but it's really beautiful. I think it's crazy to have to pay to enter each windmill; we didn't see the need, so the photos we took along the way were enough for us.

Then there are other things that are also worthwhile. The cheese factory (well, the shop) is great because they have thousands of types and they have bowls so you can try them all.

Zaanse Schans combines very well with Amsterdam because of its proximity and because it allows adding mills, tradition and rural landscapes to an urban visit, and with Edam or Volendam to complete a classic route through the most representative towns of the country.
