Edam (Jan 4, 2026):

Edam
It's not worth it
We took this trip visiting several cities and countries. Here's the complete route:

Volendam's story in a few lines:

Origins:

Edam emerged in the Middle Ages as a small fishing settlement located next to a dam on the Ye River, which allowed for water control and favored the growth of the village.

Middle Ages:

It obtained city rights in the 14th century and became a prominent center for shipbuilding and maritime trade. Its port boosted economic activity, attracting merchants from across the region.

19th Century:

With the gradual closure of the port, maritime activity decreased, but the town gained international fame thanks to the production and export of Edam cheese, which became its most recognized symbol.

Present:

Today, Edam is a beautifully preserved historic town, famous for its traditional cheese market and typical Dutch architecture. It's a peaceful tourist destination near Amsterdam.

General conclusions ✦✦

It's famous for its Edam cheese, but the town itself is quite small and doesn't have anything particularly noteworthy to warrant a visit. There are many more beautiful towns in the area.

Edam goes very well with Amsterdam due to its proximity and ease of access, and with Volendam to complete a route through charming traditional villages by the water with a great local atmosphere.
