History of Montpellier in a few lines:
Origins:
Montpellier was founded in the 10th century as a small feudal settlement, relatively young by French standards. Its location between the interior and the Mediterranean quickly made it a hub for trade.
Middle Ages:
During the Middle Ages, Montpellier distinguished itself as a major university and medical center. Its renowned Faculty of Medicine, the oldest still operating in the Western world, was founded in 1220. It also flourished as a trading city, attracting Jewish, Muslim, and Christian merchants.
19th Century:
In the 19th century, the city experienced significant urban development thanks to the wine trade and the arrival of the railway. Its squares, boulevards, and buildings were modernized, fully integrating it into the dynamism of southern France.
Present:
Today, Montpellier is one of France's youngest and most dynamic cities, renowned for its universities, modern architecture (such as the Antigone district), and vibrant cultural scene. It is a rapidly expanding scientific, technological, and Mediterranean hub.
You can see it in one day unless you want to visit museums.
Unlike other towns and cities in southern France, Montpellier has no Roman past. Pleasant places to eat and stroll.
The hotel pillow was very uncomfortable. If you're traveling by car, bring your own; you'll be glad you did sometimes.

Montpellier goes very well with Toulouse, especially if you're looking for a route that connects the Mediterranean with the major cities of southern France.
