History of Narbonne in a few lines:
Origins:
Narbonne was founded by the Romans in 118 BC as Narbo Martius, becoming the first Roman colony in Gaul. Its location on the Via Domitia quickly transformed it into a commercial and administrative center of enormous importance.
Middle Ages:
During the Middle Ages, Narbonne was an episcopal see and one of the main ports of the western Mediterranean. Its power gradually declined after the collapse of the natural harbor due to the silting up of the Aude River, although it remained an important religious and commercial center.
19th Century:
In the 19th century, the arrival of the railway and the boom in the wine trade revitalized the city. Urban renewal and the restoration of monuments reinforced its regional role in southern France.
Present:
Today, Narbonne is renowned for its impressive unfinished cathedral, its Roman heritage (including a section of the Via Domitia), its central market, and its proximity to the sea. It is a historic city with a tranquil, Mediterranean atmosphere.
A quiet, well-maintained city, steeped in history and crossed by the Canal de la Robine, boasting a rich history spanning over 2000 years.
Narbonne goes very well with Montpellier, especially if you're looking for a short route along the Mediterranean coast with a great atmosphere and historical heritage.
We didn't sleep. It was a city we were just passing through; we were traveling in our car.
