History of Marseille in a few lines:
Origins:
Marseille was founded around 600 BC by Greek colonists from Phocaea under the name Massalia. It is the oldest city in France, established as a key trading port connecting the Mediterranean with the interior of Europe.
Middle Ages:
During the Middle Ages, the city maintained its commercial and port importance. Although it suffered periods of conflict and epidemics, it retained a relatively autonomous status and a very distinct maritime character.
19th Century:
In the 19th century, Marseille experienced spectacular growth thanks to colonial trade, the opening of the Suez Canal, and industrialization. Large port infrastructures were built, and the city became the gateway to France from the Mediterranean.
Present:
Today, Marseille is the second largest city in France and one of the most important ports in Europe. Its cultural diversity, the Old Port, the Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica, and its Mediterranean coves make it a vibrant and unique city.
We absolutely loved it; we even needed more time. There's so much to see, enjoy, and explore. Although it's supposedly a dangerous city, thankfully we didn't encounter anything unusual.
You have to leave the car in a parking lot since there isn't one in the area, but they have a consortium with one that is a 5-minute walk away.
On the way back from the hotel we treated ourselves to a delicious brunch, with excellent service.
