History of Sukhothai in a few lines:

Foundation:

Sukhothai was the first capital of the Kingdom of Siam, founded in the 13th century (1238) after becoming independent from the Khmer Empire.

Golden Age:

Under the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng (1279-1298), the kingdom prospered culturally and politically. It is considered the birthplace of Thai writing and classical Thai art.

Religion and culture:

The architectural and sculptural style that defines Thai Buddhism developed, with iconic temples and statues.

Slope:

At the end of the 14th century, Sukhothai lost power and was absorbed by the Kingdom of Ayutthaya.

Present:

Today it is a World Heritage Historical Park (UNESCO), famous for its ruins, temples and statues that showcase the splendor of ancient Siam.

General conclusions ✦✦

Sukhothai Historical Park is divided into five main areas: central, north, south, east, and west. Each area costs 200 baht per person if you walk (bike rental is recommended) and 50 baht per person to bring a bike in. The temples are open-air and you can see them all in 3 hours.

I wouldn't say it's a must-see; it's different from other places, well-preserved but ultimately geared towards tourists. The airport is very far from the park, although you can walk there from the city. We had to because there were no Grab or buses that would take us. It's best to arrange everything before you go.

Ideally, you should rent bikes for the route; besides being more fun, they're incredibly cheap (20 pounds per person) and walking can be quite a long distance. Everything must be paid in cash.

Motorcycles are not allowed unless they are electric or belong to the security guards.

We rented them from a stall near the entrance, and we ended up talking to the guy who does absolutely everything. He even provided us with a car to take us back to the airport. He'll rent you a bike or build you an 8-story building 😅. Plus, everything is negotiable, though., No He speaks English, but he manages with a translator. You can arrange everything with him in advance, airport pickup and anything else you need, because Grab doesn't work as well there as in the rest of Thailand.

His name is "JO". His phone/WhatsApp number is: 062-3090461. And his email address is: phiphat26042522@gmail.com

We thought the flights had been expensive, and even more so when we saw the propeller plane, which looked like a toy; we were terrified… (don't forget my glasses with the humidity… 😅

Avión Sukhothai

But in the end, it turned out to be like a private jet inside. They gave us food and drinks throughout the flight, as many times as we wanted, on a 1 hour 20 minute flight!!!.

And on the way back, at Sukhothai airport, while we were waiting, they put you in a lounge with all-you-can-eat food and drinks, which is also included in the ticket. It's the most beautiful airport we've ever seen; it even has a mini-zoo. Perhaps the waiting area you see in the photo doesn't look very nice, but the other area is very well-maintained, both inside and out. This airline doesn't discriminate based on class, but they treat you like a VIP. Bangkok Airways great discovery:

Espera aeropuerto Sukhothai

Sukhothai combines very well with Bangkok because it is often a logical stop between the capital and the north thanks to its historical ruins and peaceful atmosphere, and with Chiang Mai because it fits perfectly into land routes that connect both destinations through temples, history and nature.
