in a few lines:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2><h3 style=\"margin: 0;\"><strong>Origins:<\/strong><\/h3><p style=\"margin: 0 0 6px 0; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5;\">Alcal\u00e1 de Henares has Roman roots under the name of Complutum, founded in the 1st century AD. It was an important urban center in Roman Hispania, located in the valley of the Henares river.<\/p><h3 style=\"margin: 0;\"><strong>Middle Ages:<\/strong><\/h3><p style=\"margin: 0 0 6px 0; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5;\">After the Muslim invasion, the city was called Al-Qal&#039;at al-Nahr (\u201ccastle on the river\u201d). In the 11th century it passed into Christian hands and became an episcopal see, standing out for its religious importance.<\/p><h3 style=\"margin: 0;\"><strong>19th Century:<\/strong><\/h3><p style=\"margin: 0 0 6px 0; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5;\">During the 19th century, Alcal\u00e1 lost some of its relevance after the confiscation of church property and the relocation of the University to Madrid. However, it maintained its historical and cultural character.<\/p><h3 style=\"margin: 0;\"><strong>Present:<\/strong><\/h3><p style=\"margin: 0; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5;\">Today, Alcal\u00e1 de Henares is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its University and for being the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes. You can really see it all in a single day since the points of interest are very close to each other (except for the Roman ruins, which are a little further away).<\/p><p id=\"j3opi135182\" class=\"cq8Rb Svs7G\">There was a time when absolutely everything was free, but that has changed. It seems our taxes aren&#039;t enough to cover public attractions, so they charge for everything, even breathing. But since it&#039;s what we have to deal with, I&#039;ll at least leave you a link to a website where you can buy tickets: <a class=\"A9l0G EA-vN\" href=\"https:\/\/visitalcala.es\/que-visitar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Web.<\/u><\/a><\/p><p id=\"trqka919\" class=\"cq8Rb Svs7G\"><strong><u>Tapas:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p><p id=\"1g39u147927\" class=\"cq8Rb Svs7G\">The range here is enormous and there are thousands of places that serve good tapas; in fact, going into a bar and not being served a tapa is a real shame. <u>Alcal\u00e1<\/u>\u00a0It&#039;s an insult.
