Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea, with a history linked to legends and maritime trade. Its name is associated with the Malay word for "red eagle.".<\/p>

Legend:<\/strong><\/h3>

The most famous is that of Mahsuri, a woman unjustly accused and executed, who cursed the island for seven generations. This story is part of the local cultural identity.<\/p>

Historical period:<\/strong><\/h3>

For centuries it was a strategic point for Arab, Chinese, and Indian traders. It also suffered pirate attacks and regional conflicts.<\/p>

Colonialism:<\/strong><\/h3>

Under British rule in the 19th century, Langkawi remained an agricultural and fishing area.<\/p>

They speak very softly, their pronunciation in English (the few who speak it) is horrible, the food is quite spicy but very tasty, and they are incredibly kind and helpful. Do not go on excursions<\/u>\u00a0programmed by them, they are quite a scam.<\/p>

It's a little paradise island, although you might be surprised to see plastic on the beaches. They're not very developed in this area and seem to think it's harmless to litter. There are many volunteers who help clean the beaches. Some hotels have trash cans and plastic collection points for this purpose.<\/p>

Renting a 125cc scooter is a must; it costs \u20ac7 a day and filling the tank is about \u20ac0.60. No experience is necessary; you can learn in a minute. It's like a bicycle, with no gears. The roads are excellent, and other drivers are very respectful. There isn't much traffic, they drive very calmly, and exploring the whole island this way is a joy (just keep in mind that they drive on the left, as it was a British colony).<\/p>
