Zurich's history in a few lines:
Origins:
Zurich originated as a Celtic settlement that was later Romanized under the name Turicum. Its location on the shores of Lake Zurich and the Limmat River made it a strategic point for trade and control of Alpine routes.
Middle Ages:
During the Middle Ages, Zurich developed into a major trading city and attained the status of a free imperial city. In the 16th century, it became a key center of the Protestant Reformation under Ulrich Zwingli, which profoundly shaped its religious and political identity.
19th Century:
In the 19th century, Zurich transformed into an industrial and financial hub, driven by railway construction and banking growth. Its university and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), founded in 1855, solidified the city's position as a European intellectual and scientific center.
Present:
Today, Zurich is the economic capital of Switzerland, renowned for its quality of life, its global financial sector, its architecture that blends tradition and modernity, and its vibrant cultural scene. It is one of Europe's major urban centers and a gateway to the country.
Zurich is a gray city, with prices beyond our Spanish budgets. We had to go, but it wasn't to our liking. Luckily, we had the hotel's bikes, which were a lifesaver 😅; they were included in the room rate. It was also a good thing we brought our own food because getting a hot meal there was practically impossible.
